State awards $117M in transitional aid to cities

Gov. Chris Christie's administration announced this evening that it awarded $117 million in additional state aid to five municipalities with significant financial troubles that would otherwise trigger significant local property tax increases.

The following transitional aid awards were made by the Department of Community Affairs:

  • Camden, $61.4 million; it sought $67.5 million
  • Trenton, $22 million; it sought $25.6 million
  • Paterson, $21 million; it sought $47.7 million
  • Union City, $12 million; it sought $14 million
  • Lawnside, $700,000; it sought $850,000
  • Bridgeton, $0; it sought $400,000

Technically, the money to provide the aid doesn't currently exist. Christie erased it from the budget as part of a $139 million line-item veto in June. Democrats howled, and Christie agreed to restore the funds, but the Legislature hasn't yet taken action.

Municipalities receiving funds must agree to state oversight in order to receive the first 75 percent of the funds and comply with the reporting requirements and fiscal and management reforms to receive the final 25 percent later in the fiscal year.
